Fort Bend County Libraries invites book lovers to join in a “Book Break” on Thursday, Dec. 11, beginning at 1 p.m. in the conference room of the Sugar Land Branch Library.
The book to be discussed is “March,” written by Geraldine Brooks.
In Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women,” the patriarch of the family has a very minor role, writing an occasional letter home from the war. In “March,” Brooks reverses the story, focusing upon Mr. March and his experiences as a Union chaplain in the American Civil War.
March is a particularly ideological abolitionist, whose views are so extreme that he alienates even the Union supporters. He is assigned to teach at a cotton plantation in Union-occupied Mississippi, where freed slaves now work for wages but are still cruelly treated. The horrors of war, combined with his own guilt, regret and utter disillusionment, take their toll on March, and he is forced to return home as a very ill, broken man.
The literary discussion group is free and open to the public; those attending are invited to bring along a lunch, if desired.
