A Sugar Land-area man was shot in the abdomen over the weekend, possibly by robbers who interrupted a drug transaction.
According to information emailed to Sugar Land residents by a Sugar Land Police Department crime prevention officer, police dispatchers received three phone calls alerting the department that shots had been fired in the Grants Lake area.
According to a department spokesman, the incident occurred on Saturday night.
One caller "heard a door being kicked in, then heard several shots fired," the crime prevention officer said in the email. Police were then dispatched at 9:56 p.m. to am apartment in the 2700 block of Grants Lake Boulevard.
"Officers found no one in the apartment, but witnesses said they saw people running from the apartment after hearing the gunshots," the police spokesman said.
After searching the area, police officers found a man, identified only as "Gonzales," who had been shot in the abdomen. The crime prevention officer's email said an investigation revealed the gunshot victim had been inside the apartment.
The man was transported to a local hospital, released "and later detained for questioning," the police spokesman said. "The investigation continues."
"Preliminary investigation indicates that a drug transaction was taking place at the residence and that a robbery was attempted, which led to the shooting," the email from the crime prevention officer said.
In the email message to residents, the officer asked that anyone with information about the shooting either call the Sugar Land Police Department at 281-275-2525, or call Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-8477.
