Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations. Here are some current needs:

Prepare Tax Forms

Assist low and middle-income people needing help completing their federal tax returns. Participating in a program approved by the Internal Revenue Service, you'll receive training that will equip you to staff one of the many tax assistance stations opening up at libraries and community centers throughout Fort Bend County during the tax season. This assignment calls for computer-literate volunteers with good interpersonal skills.

Make a difference

English language tutors are needed to help Fort Bend residents new to our country achieve literacy. Eager adult students from around the world are waiting to learn English from dedicated tutors who receive training from a Sugar Land educational agency. Volunteer’s ages 18 or older that are interested in becoming tutors are encouraged to register for the following training sessions: Saturday, January 10, and Saturday, January 17, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Take the wheel

Living independently is a little easier for elderly persons in Fort Bend County thanks to an agency that uses volunteers to take them to medical appointments and grocery stores. If you have a good driving record, consider using your car or van to help one or more of these seniors run essential errands. The most pressing need is for volunteers willing to help out on occasional weekdays.

Additional opportunities:

• Children are invited to spread holiday cheer by making greeting cards for residents of local nursing homes.

• Schedule and coordinate volunteers for a local housing program’s construction site in Rosenberg.

• Weekday, Saturday, and evening volunteer shifts are available at resale shops in Stafford that support local nonprofit agencies.

• Help a sports organization in Missouri City with data entry and word processing.

• Make friendly visits to a resident of a 24-hour care facility in Richmond for individuals with mental disabilities.

• Help with receptionist duties, phone coverage, photocopying, and filing at a women’s shelter in Rosenberg

For more information on volunteer opportunities, call Volunteer Fort Bend at 281-499-9102, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
