Volunteer Fort Bend is looking for people who are interested in helping local civic and nonprofit organizations. Here are some current needs:
Stock resale shops
Accept donations and sort merchandise for resale shops in Richmond and Stafford that benefit nonprofit agencies serving low-income persons and abused women. Your organizational skills will help bring order to what can otherwise be a chaotic collection of clothing and household items. You’ll be able to select a weekly shift between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays or Saturdays that fits your schedule
Prepare Tax Forms
Assist low and middle-income people needing help completing their federal tax returns. Participating in a program approved by the Internal Revenue Service, you'll receive training that will equip you to staff one of the many tax assistance stations opening up at libraries and community centers throughout Fort Bend County during the tax season. This assignment calls for computer-literate volunteers with good interpersonal skills.
Help staff free dental clinic
Professional dentists, dental hygienists, and registered dental assistants are needed to provide free dental clinic services for low-income residents of Fort Bend County. If you have the appropriate professional credentials, consider putting your professional skills to use in helping to reduce the waiting-list time many of these individuals face in having their dental needs attended to. Weekly or biweekly three-hour shifts are available from 9 a.m. to Noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and, Fridays at a social service organization’s Stafford location.
Additional opportunities:
• Connect with a homebound senior through friendly phone calls.
• Transport families undergoing crisis between their temporary homes and a Missouri City social service center that helps them rebuild their lives.
• Set up and maintain displays of baby clothing, cribs, strollers, and car seats at a "Mommy Store" run by a women's center in Richmond.
• Mentor a student in need of academic and social support for thirty minutes to an hour a week at a Fort Bend school of your choice.
• Teach life-skills classes to residents of a women’s shelter in Rosenberg.
• A seniors’ program in Rosenberg needs help with switchboard relief, data entry, photocopying, filing, and assembly of information packets.
